Any filmmaker trying to draw meaning from the Holocaust onscreen faces potential pitfalls. Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” a dark horse candidate for best picture at the Academy Awards on Sunday, avoids all of these traps and finds something new and profoundly unsettling to say about the Holocaust. “Zone” is ostensibly about the genocide of European Jewry, but its focus is not on the Jewish victims, who remain almost entirely offscreen. Rather, Mr. Glazer exposes the perpetrators to the scrutiny of the audience’s gaze. “Zone” depicts the life of Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, and his family at their handsome estate just outside the walls of the death camp.

CNN —“The Zone of Interest,” Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar-nominated historical drama, is technically a film about the Holocaust. “I knew right from the off that I didn’t want to reenact these atrocities using actors and extras,” director Glazer told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in a February interview. “In other words, it’s out of sight but never out of mind,” Glazer told Amanpour. “No matter how good an actor is, faking the pain of a severe injury, of fatality, is a very hard thing,” Burn told IndieWire. At its core, Glazer says, “The Zone of Interest” is about what we choose to pay attention to — and what we’re able to ignore.

With a dearth of new releases in cinemas, Paramount Pictures' Tina Fey-scripted musical “Mean Girls” pushed its two-week total past $50 million, along with $16.2 million internationally. CNN —The nominees for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, with “Oppenheimer” leading the charge with 13 nominations. There were few surprises from the British Academy, with strong awards season favorites faring well, including Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 11 nominations and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” with nine. Standing out from the crowd was “The Zone of Interest,” Jonathan Glazer’s unique film about the Holocaust, which achieved nine nominations. “Barbie” received nods in five categories, including Margot Robbie for best actress, but did not land a best picture nomination. The awards ceremony, hosted by actor David Tennant, will be held at the Royal Festival Hall, in London, on February 18.

CNN —French film director Justine Triet condemned what she called French President Emmanuel Macron’s “shocking” repression of the pension reform protests during her Palme d’Or acceptance speech at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday. “The commodification of culture that the neoliberal government defends is in the process of breaking the French cultural exception,” Triet continued.
